Interested in writing, directing, producing or even working on the crew for a film? All films – dramatic, action, comedy, romance, sci-fi, horror, animation – start with a script. Understanding what producers, directors, actors, and crew need from a script is essential to both people who want to write screenplays and people who want to make films. This class will help you learn how to write and work in a visual medium as you learn how story, characters, dialogue, and plot structure are developed.

Film stories are meant to exist in a real world with locations, wardrobe, sounds, and interesting characters. If you can “see” a world of your own making, this class will give you the tools to “name” it on paper by introducing you to proper  screenplay format; how to develop characters and storyline; film literacy; and how to write visually.

As homework each student will write a short one scene script that will be read aloud by fellow students and then discussed by the whole class. Using the feedback you receive, you will then rewrite the scene so it has all the elements of a complete story.   The  most developed scripts will be entered into the competition to be actually shot as a short film in the BYFC  “MAKE A FILM” class.
